Dermal Fillers

As the skin ages, it gradually loses collagen, elastin and fat. These are the components of the skin that give it structure - the scaffolding of the skin. When present in high amounts, skin is supple, firm and plump. As the levels of these components decrease, our skin becomes thinner, more lined and wrinkled with reduced volume, plumpness and fullness.

Strategically placed dermal fillers take the place of lost fat pads and collagen. Some even promote the production of collagen. This helps to restore the skin's volume and fill deep wrinkles, thus giving the face a firmer, more youthful appearance.

What are dermal fillers made from?

The leading dermal fillers used by most UK practitioners are hyaluronic acid-based products. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance within the body, which makes adverse reactions to it unlikely.

Are dermal fillers permanent?

Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are not permanent. They are broken down naturally by the body, or can be dissolved using an enzyme called hyaluronidase either upon request, or in an emergency. It is vital that your practitioner is trained in filler reversal. Hyaluronic acid fillers vary in terms of how long they last, some last 6-8 months some last 12-18 months and beyond.

What is a Vascular Occlusion?

A vascular occlusion is when dermal filler has blocked an artery. You may experience some or all of the following symptoms; intense pain, pallor, delayed capillary refil and loss of sensation in the affected area. The chances of a vascular occlusion are rare and, steps are taken to reduce the risk of causing a V.O. If you are ever in any doubt, please contact us immediately and we will provide an urgent assessment. The sooner that you receive treatment, the better the outcome.

What is hyaluronidase?

Hyaluronidase is an enzyme, used to break down hyaluronic acid (dermal filler). It is administered electively for example, if a client wishes to have lip filler dissolved, or in an emergency. Prior to any filler dissolving treatment, you will be skin tested to hyaluronidase. This is because a small percent of the population that suffer allergic reactions from bee and wasp venom, may have an immediate hypersensitive (allergic) reaction to the hyaluronidase.

What if I am allergic to bees and wasp venom (stings)?

Sadly, if you do have an allergy to wasps and or bees, we will not be able to offer you treatment with dermal fillers as there is potential that we may not be able to reverse the filler should you require it either electively or in an emergency.
